Project Objectives

We sought to design our structural engineering programme so that students can develop skills that will enable them to become exemplary structural engineers with a focus on the future of our planet and its people.

This project has given us, as a project team, an opportunity to stop and think: to reimagine what our structural engineers will face in years to come. We need to be ahead of the game in preparing our current students with the skills necessary to not only have a successful career but to be an engineer who can make a difference in the world, an engineer who can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Design of the Project

The strategic direction of this project was influenced by the following key goals:

  • to be aligned with TU Dublin strategy,

    • Graduates who are concerned with Sustainable Development and the Societal Impacts of engineering work.

  • to empower our students to be reflective practitioners,

  • to build on existing strengths of our staff,

  • to showcase best practice,

  • to ensure student-centred programmes,

  • to produce industry-ready graduates,

  • to maintain our professional body recognition,

  • to develop and support a culture of research in engineering educations

  • to be future-orientated.

The TU Dublin Strategy and TU Dublin Educational Model set a framework for what we hope to achieve.  Maintaining our reputation with industry and with our professional bodies is a key consideration and the new Accreditation Criteria from Engineers Ireland place a focus on sustainability and societal issues.

We look outwards to society on an international scale allowing us to engage with the concept of sustainable development and more specifically the SDGs. Hence, our project is focused on updating our programme to give students an opportunity to develop the necessary skills, but also working within a student-centred frame to engage students in their own learning by creating an e-portfolio exercise to initiate reflection.

We specifically wished to include students within our project and took the opportunity to co-create the definitions and Action Statements with current students.
